A Job to Do

Dear Mama, how you doing? It’s kind of hectic here.
I am doing a real good job, though why ain’t always clear.
Mama don’t you worry; there’s nothing that I lack.
My platoon is the very best, and we’ve got each other’s back.

The funny things I miss? It’s gonna make you laugh.
Like little brother’s crazy music, or a quiet bubble bath.
I’ll tell you what I don’t miss, I don’t miss the beach at all.
There’s sand enough to last a life. I miss the brilliance of fall.

Don’t worry ‘bout a thing here, it’s all right.
The stars hide in the day,
and shine at night.
The sun comes up each morning,
and goes down like a sigh.
Don’t worry ‘bout a thing here, it’s all right

Dear daughter, how are you? Things here are going well.
Your little brother’s employed now, working at the Taco Bell.
You know he sends his love to you. He follows all the news.
I know he doesn’t write enough, but, he’s very proud of you.

I realized you’ve grown up as I’m writing this today,
I remember your first word like it was yesterday
The word was book, and it always made us laugh,
you splashed and laughed with glee in your first bubble bath

Don’t worry ‘bout a thing here, it’s all right
The stars hide in the day,
and shine at night.
The sun comes up each morning,
and goes down like a sigh.
Don’t worry ‘bout a thing here, it’s all right

You know it’s always something; when will it ever end?
Please don’t mind the tear stains, I sprung a leak again.
Perhaps someday I’ll understand a little better than I do,
but for now I’ll settle for the fact, you have a job to do.
